In Somewhere Between You and Me, young nonbinary transgender artists intimately seek to understand and bring understanding to what it means to experience life as a nonbinary person: the desire to connect, little room for uninfluenced exploration of self, isolation, tenderness, whatever it is to exist while trying to discover who they could've been without the initial, culturally imposed pressure to exist as man or woman, and who they are despite that ongoing pressure.

The artists of Somewhere Between you and Me amplify the processes of unlearning socially constructed ideas of their own identity and developing a sense of self from infancy in adulthood. Through both individual and collaborative work, the artists note the need for community throughout the isolating experience, and with each piece foster a relationship between the artists and viewers that produces a sense of quietly overwhelming intimacy.

The work aims to question what it means to be a man, to be a woman, to be a person: Who could you be once liberated from the pressure to exist within the constraints of how you were expected to be? In what ways do you over-correct, over-perform, over-analyze? How do you unlearn everything you never wanted to be and form a new identity?

Join us at Olly Olly on Saturday, May 25, 2019, 7pm-10pm, for an evening reception with artists Miki Beyer, Emil Melia, Sami Cola, and Paul Karcic.

Olly Olly wants to nourish the body and the community as well. We will be collecting healthy non-perishable food items for the Food Bridge Program at Britepaths, which provides short-term emergency food assistance to Fairfax County area residents who are in crisis. We encourage you to bring a healthy non-perishable food item to donate. The Food Bridge Program is most in need of cooking oil, brown rice, dried beans, canned fruit in its own juices, canned tomato products and pasta sauce.

Olly Olly, located at 10417 Main Street, 2nd Floor in Fairfax, VA, is open for special events and by appointment. During the run of Somewhere Between You and Me, Olly Olly will also be open for special viewing hours Fridays and Saturdays from 11am to 3pm. Somewhere Between You and Me will be on view at Olly Olly from May 25, 2019 through July 20, 2019.
